Junior golf clubs are sized by the player’s height, not their age. A child 45–48 inches tall (114–122 cm) takes a 45-inch fitting size; one at 51–54 inches takes a 51. Measure your child in socks against a wall, find the band below, and that is the set size to buy.
This matters more in golf than in most sports. A club that is too long forces a flat, arms-only swing that a coach then has to undo. Junior sets are graded in three-inch steps precisely because children outgrow them roughly every twelve to eighteen months.
Kids golf club size chart by height
Find your child’s height, read off the fitting size. Manufacturers label junior sets by these numbers — a “US Kids Golf UL45” or a “45-inch set” is the row for a child 45 to 48 inches tall.
| Fitting size | Player height | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| 36″ | 36–39″ | 91.4–99.0 cm |
| 39″ | 39–42″ | 99.0–106.7 cm |
| 42″ | 42–45″ | 106.7–114.3 cm |
| 45″ | 45–48″ | 114.3–121.9 cm |
| 48″ | 48–51″ | 121.9–129.5 cm |
| 51″ | 51–54″ | 129.5–137.2 cm |
| 54″ | 54–57″ | 137.2–144.8 cm |
| 57″ | 57–60″ | 144.8–152.4 cm |
| 60″ | 60–63″ | 152.4–160.0 cm |
| 63″ | 63–66″ | 160.0–167.6 cm |
| 66″ | 66–69″ | 167.6–175.3 cm |
Below 36 inches tall, a child is in “first club” territory — a single plastic or foam club rather than a graded set. There is no point fitting a full set to a toddler.

How to measure for junior golf clubs
Two measurements, and the second one settles ties.
- Height. Shoes off, heels and back against a wall, looking straight ahead. Mark the top of the head with a flat book and measure to the floor.
- Wrist-to-floor. Standing relaxed with arms hanging naturally, measure from the crease of the wrist straight down to the floor. Where a child sits between two height bands, the longer wrist-to-floor takes the longer club.
Should I buy longer clubs for them to grow into?
No. This is the single most common mistake parents make with junior golf. Too-long clubs sit too upright at address, push the hands away from the body and teach a swing that has to be rebuilt later. Fit the child now, and expect to move up a size every year or so while they are growing fastest.
How many clubs does a beginner actually need?
Three or four. A driver or fairway wood, a mid iron, a wedge and a putter cover everything a junior needs for their first couple of seasons. Full sets are heavier, more expensive, and the extra clubs sit in the bag unused.
Sources and verification
Junior fitting sizes above follow the height-graded system used across junior golf, including US Kids Golf’s sizing convention. Equipment conformity for competitive play is governed by the USGA. Individual manufacturers grade slightly differently — check the specific set’s own height chart before ordering, and where possible have your child swing one before buying.
