A 10-year-old around 55 inches tall and 70 pounds rides a 110–125 cm board. Snowboard length goes by height and weight, and weight is the more important of the two — the board has to flex under the rider to turn properly.
The old rule of “board should reach your chin” is a rough starting point only. A light child on a board sized to their chin often cannot bend it at all, and a board that will not flex will not turn.

A note on the inch column. The chart this data came from listed board lengths in inches that were roughly half the correct conversion, and repeated the same inch values for both the younger and older age blocks — 3-year-olds and 9-year-olds were given identical figures. Those values were wrong, so the inch column above is our own conversion from the centimetre figures, which are the ones manufacturers actually use.

Adjust for riding style and ability
- First-timer: shortest length in the band. Shorter boards are far easier to turn and much less punishing to learn on.
- Park and freestyle: shorter, for spins and presses.
- All-mountain or powder: longer end of the band, for float and stability.
Where a child’s height and weight point to different rows, follow weight. A heavier rider on a short board will wash out; a lighter rider on a long board will fight it all day.

Boot size is the measurement that actually matters
Board width matters more than most parents realise. If boots overhang the edges of the board, they catch in a turn and throw the rider. Match the board’s waist width to the boot size, and check the bindings are rated for a junior boot — adult bindings will not hold a small boot securely.

Helmet, always
A snowboard helmet should sit level and snug with goggles in place and no gap between goggle and helmet. Look for one certified to ASTM F2040 or CE EN 1077.

Sources and verification
Centimetre length bands above are standard junior snowboard sizing in general use; the inch column is our own conversion, for the reason explained above. Helmet certification references ASTM F2040 and EN 1077. Board models vary considerably in flex and effective edge — treat this as a starting range and confirm with the shop, particularly on waist width against boot size.
